Overview Newport Timber was established as the woodlands link to Interstate Paper in 1968. Our mission is to provide quality wood chips to our sister company, Interstate Paper, and quality pine sawwood to our state-of-the art on-site sawmill. In 1998, Newport entered into an innovative partnership to create the first complete, fully integrated value-added forest products manufacturing facility in the United States. Successful start-up of this facility occurred in August 1999. Newport Timber combines a high tech small log sawmill, with production capacity of 30-million board feet/year of pine lumber, with a world-class chipmill, producing over half a million tons of quality chips annually. We are committed to, and a strong supporter of, the comprehensive program of forestry and conservation practices known as the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). All of our wood suppliers are encouraged to become certified under the Master Timber Harvester and Education Program. We practice land stewardship ethics on both Newport owned or leased lands as well as on private timberlands. Conservation of soil, air, and water quality in conjunction with protecting wildlife and fish habitat is not just a goal but a passion. Products & Services With only a small company-owned land base, Newport Timber primarily purchases pine pulpwood, chip-n-saw and sawtimber from private landowners throughout South Georgia and lower South Carolina. Purchasing in excess of one million tons annually, our foresters, skilled in timber appraisals, will cruise your timber and provide a precise assessment of its value. Being in business for nearly 35 years, we have developed valued relationships with all area markets, including Interstate Paper, our sister company. State Best Management Practices (BMP) guidelines are always followed when harvesting either private or company controlled timber. Weekly Sustainable Forestry Initiative and BMP inspections are required by company policy on all timber harvesting. We always strive to optimize product utilization to achieve maximum returns on your investment while maintaining environmental stewardship. Newport also provides a unique partnering opportunity for private landowners by leasing premerchantable pine plantations ranging in age from two to 13 years. A qualified forester will appraise your young timber and advise you on different methodologies for maximizing cash flow from your timber investment. Other services include land management and reforestation planning for the private landowner. A professional management plan can be developed for your lands no matter what the acreage. Our experienced team will design a specific forestry plan based on the landowner's goals. We can accommodate the landowner who is looking for long-term timber productivity, improvement of wildlife habitat or simply interested in enhancing the health of their forest.
